FEMA Offering Limited Approval for Debris Removal in Private/Gated Communities; Representatives Asked to Contact City Staff

Post Date:10/06/2017 10:00 AM
In limited circumstances, based on the severity of Hurricane Irma’s impact to private roads/gated communities within Melbourne, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may determine that debris removal from the curbside in private roads/gated communities is eligible under the Public Assistance Program.

Debris will only be removed from private roads/gated communities in the case of severe damage, per FEMA policy. If the debris is an immediate threat to residents, City of Melbourne contractors may be authorized to enter private roads/gated communities to remove debris from the curbside to eliminate threats to life, public health and safety. This will only be approved if hold harmless and right-of-entry documentation has been executed by the residents on the private road or a representative of the private/gated community. In addition, the private road/gated community must be of the type that receives individual residential curbside garbage and recycling collection service using their own individual roll carts supplied by the City’s solid waste services contractor, Waste Management.

Any private/gated property that wishes to pursue approval should have a representative of the community, such as the president of the homeowner’s association or management firm, contact the City of Melbourne debris management officer at 321-608-5080 or jennifer.wilster@mlbfl.org, to coordinate possible FEMA approval.
