The City of Melbourne operates and maintains an extensive park system. Over 232 acres of city parks, including community parks, athletic fields, and special use facilities, are available for the community's and neighborhood use and enjoyment.
Parks are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. without a permit, or from sunrise to sunset with a permit.
Many of the parks feature picnic areas, pavilions, gazebos, playgrounds, athletic fields, hike and bike trails, and other amenities. The parks systems will continue to conserve open space and natural resources, and provide for the present and future needs of outdoor recreation opportunities.
Melbourne promotes community beautification and urban forestry, and has for more than two decades qualified each year as a Tree City USA participant. An Arbor Day ceremony is held each year. The great value of trees is recognized in the City Code and protections are provided through a permitting process as well as zoning and building regulations. An award program recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to beautify property in Melbourne.
Beautification Grant Program
Citizens and groups with a desire to complete beautification projects to improve the appearance of public spaces, medians, and rights-of-way in Melbourne are to be eligible to seek grants to support their projects.
The program developed by the Beautification & Environmental Advisory Committee is to provide grants of $500 to $2,500 for landscaping improvements, with the project applicant providing a match of 50%.
Those interested in seeking a grant must complete an APPLICATION FORM and must agree to maintain the landscaped area for a year. Grants are provided as reimbursements after work is completed.
Applications are to be evaluated by the Beautification & Environmental Advisory Committee. The evaluations are to be based on the “Florida Friendly Landscape Principles” developed by the University of Florida’s Cooperative Extension Service.
Applications are to be submitted to the City of Melbourne Parks Division, 2895 Harper Road, Melbourne, FL 32904, or send the information via e-mail. Interested parties can also request additional information via e-mail, or by calling (321) 608-7471.
