The Opportunity Zone Program is administered through the U.S. Department of the Treasury. An opportunity zone is a designated area, which is economically distressed and is eligible for investments from a qualified opportunity fund. Investors in the funds, may receive tax benefits from capital gains which are reinvested in opportunity zone areas. Qualified opportunity zones benefit economically, when qualified opportunity funds are placed within these eligible census tracts. The City of Melbourne has three census tracts, which have been designated by the Treasury Department.
For more information on how opportunity zones work, visit the Treasury Department’s Community Development Financial Institution Fund: Opportunity Zones Resources.
