Pick Up of Items

Lost, Found or Safekeeping Property

Lost Property

Items that people may have lost, such as wallets, jewelry, identification, etc., that are turned into the Melbourne Police Department by someone other than the owner.

Found Property

Items that people may have found in the local area, such as wallets, jewelry, identification, etc., and turned into the MPD for storage until the owner identifies the property.

Safekeeping Property

Items that are turned in by police officers for safekeeping. Items can be considered as lost, found, or submitted due to an accident, an individual’s arrest, admittance to the hospital, etc. Items remain at the MPD in storage for a period of no more than 90 days.

Firearms/Weapons: Safekeeping

A criminal history check will have to be completed within the MPD prior to returning the item. To avoid a lengthy wait, please call for an appointment. Proof of ownership must be provided or ownership must be listed on the property receipt.

Firearms/Weapons: Evidence

Items cannot be returned to an individual until the court case has been completed  or settled. Exceptions to this rule may be made by providing a signed court order or authorization from the detective that was assigned to the case. A criminal history check will have to be completed within the MPD prior to returning the item. To avoid a lengthy wait, please call for an appointment: 321-608-6650.
