The Community Academy is designed to foster a better understanding about law enforcement and how the Melbourne police officers work with the community to prevent, detect and deter crime.
Academy attendees will be given an inside look into the operations, investigations and policies of the department through presentations and hands-on training. Topics include:
- SWAT/Conflict Negotiations
- K9 Demonstration
- Crime Lab & Forensics
- Criminal Investigations
- Drug Investigations/Gangs
- Traffic Enforcement
- Use of Force Decision Making
- Criminal Law/Search & Seizure
- Emergency Communications Center
- Active Shooter
- Community Resources/Neighborhood Watch
Academy participants will also have the opportunity to ride along with an officer on patrol and to tour the Brevard County Correctional Facility.
Classes will be held once a week. Most classes will be held at Melbourne City Hall, 900 East Strawbridge Avenue, Fourth Floor. There is no fee to participate in the Community Academy. Participants are required to attend at least 10 of the 12 classes to graduate.
The Community Academy is open to anyone 18 years of age or older who either works or lives in the City of Melbourne. All applicants will be subject to a background check.
