Veterans Preference Organization

The Department is an “Approved for Veteran’s Training” agency. This means that probationary police officers who are qualifying veterans and were Florida LEO certified after January 11, 2007, may be eligible for additional monthly benefits. The “Montgomery GI Bill” supports this on-the-job training benefit. For more information, visit the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website or call 888-442-4551.

Police Officer Trainee (Sponsorship)

The Melbourne Police Department offers sponsorships for the police academy. This means having your police academy tuition, books, and uniforms paid for in full, receiving $19.77 an hour full-time, receiving City of Melbourne benefits, and receiving a $2,500 signing bonus upon completion of the academy.

Salary

The Melbourne Police Department is currently the highest-paid agency in Brevard County.

The current starting salary for entry-level police officers is $52,665, officers with experience can start up to $57,548. As of 10/1/2024, the starting pay for entry-level police officers will be $54,766, and officers with experience can start up to $59,844.

Florida-certified police officers are eligible to receive a $10,000 sign-on bonus. Certified out-of-state police officers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, $4,000 in moving bonuses, and their equivalency of training program paid for in full.

Police academy recruits make $19.77 an hour full-time plus benefits while attending the academy; upon completion, the salary increases to our entry-level police officer salary.
