Non-exempt employees qualify for overtime pay as provided for in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Overtime pay at one and one-half an employee’s regular pay rate is paid for any hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a workweek. For purposes of calculating overtime pay only the use of accrued vacation leave, compensatory leave, and a City observed paid holiday will be considered time worked.

All overtime worked must be approved by a supervisor. Non-exempt employees are not authorized to work outside their normal work hours through the use of VDI without supervisory approval. When an employee is required to work overtime, supervision will attempt to provide advance notice. However, in emergency situations advance notice may not always be possible. Failure to work overtime when directed, or working unauthorized overtime, may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from employment.
